Wedding Inspiration and Behind-the-Scenes
THE JOURNAL

As a Charleston wedding photographer, I’m reminded every season that weddings don’t need to be large to be meaningful. Katie and Kyle’s intimate backyard celebration unfolded right at home in the heart of Charleston, and it became one of the most personal and emotional days I’ve had the honor of documenting. The quiet beauty of their neighborhood, the soft coastal light, and the familiarity of home created a setting that felt honest and deeply connected to their story.
What made their day unforgettable went far beyond décor or a traditional timeline. It was the way every detail reflected who they are. Their wedding felt lived in, warm, and uniquely them, which is exactly why intimate Charleston weddings can be some of the most powerful to photograph.
Katie and I met while teaching at Northwoods Middle School years ago. She told me back then, “You’re going to shoot my wedding one day.” I always said I wouldn’t photograph a friend’s wedding—but Katie made that decision easy.
She and Kyle had just finished renovating their Charleston home, and decided to host their wedding in the backyard. We started the day getting ready inside—documenting the quiet moments before the celebration began.
Before the ceremony, we took a short trip down the road to a peaceful pond with a small dock for their first look. It was quiet, emotional, and gave them a few minutes just to be together before the day took off.
Back at the house, we did portraits with her something blue crew and prepared for the ceremony.
Their intimate Charleston wedding took place in their own backyard. The setting was simple and beautiful—everything felt effortless and real.
The reception followed right there under a tent, with drinks, dancing, and everyone who mattered most gathered just a few feet from their home.
Katie gave a surprise speech during the reception and ended it by inviting her mom to the dance floor for a mother-daughter dance. Her mom didn’t know it was coming.
Katie thanked her for the way she raised her, the love she’s always given, and how she’s shown up through every season. That moment? One I’ll always remember—not just because I was photographing it, but because I know Katie. And I know how much that meant.
As a Charleston wedding photographer, I’ve worked in big venues, historic sites, and destination spots. But nothing compares to the kind of connection you feel at a small, intentional wedding—especially when it’s hosted in a place that already holds so much meaning.
Katie and Kyle’s backyard celebration was full of heart, history, and moments that mattered. It was real. And that’s what I always aim to capture.
