What to Look for in a Wedding Photographer (Beyond the Portfolio)

Nashville wedding at The Factory

Nashville and Charelston wedding photography

It’s more than just pretty photos.

When you’re choosing someone to document your wedding day, it should go deeper than liking their Instagram feed.
The right photographer does more than take pictures — they hold space for your story. As your local nashville wedding photographer, I want to give you a few things to think about.

Here’s what actually matters when you’re deciding who to trust with those moments.

1. Do they make you feel comfortable?

You’ll spend more time with your photographer than almost anyone else on your wedding day.
You want someone who blends in. Someone who makes space feel calm and easy — not staged.

If it feels awkward now, it’ll feel even more awkward on your wedding day. This is the most important job as wedding photographer, I feel. If I can’t get you to be yourselfs in front of the camera no matter how good I am at editing you arent going to love your photos!

2. Do they capture the moments in between?

Anyone can get the first kiss or the ceremony shot.
But do they notice your dad wiping a tear before walking you down the aisle?
The nervous laugh before your vows?
The real stuff?

That’s the difference between a photographer and a storyteller.

3. Are they local or do they have to travel in?

Now this isn’t a deal breaker for me either as a photographer or someone looking for one for their own wedding one day. There are just things to consider! Make sure it will actually be them shooting your wedding. For me I shoot weddings in both Nashville and Charleston having lived in both places it helps me understand the style of venues and locations. As a Nashville wedding photographer I love shooting venues for the first time. Its usually brought up by coupels on our calls if I have shot at their venue but really shooting somewhere the first time gives me a blank canvas to capture your wedding in the best way possible!

4. Are they experienced?

Creativity is only half of it.
Can they work with your planner? Adjust when timelines shift? Handle low light or unexpected weather?

An experienced photographer helps your day flow, not just look good.

5. Do you trust them with your story?

You’re handing over one of the most meaningful days of your life.
That takes more than a solid camera.
It takes intention.
Empathy.
Trust.

Look for someone who honors the story — not just the shot list.

Final thoughts:

Choosing a wedding photographer is more than booking a vendor.
You’re choosing someone who will witness some of the most personal, emotional moments of your life — and freeze them forever.

So ask yourself:
Do I feel at ease with them? Do I trust them to show up with heart?

That’s where the magic is.

Let’s talk.

If that sounds like what you’re looking for — I’d love to hear your story.
