Intimate Charleston Wedding | Katie + Kyle’s Backyard Celebration

Weddings don’t need to be huge to be meaningful. Katie and Kyle’s intimate Charleston wedding took place right at home—and it was one of the most personal, emotional, and special days I’ve had the honor of capturing.

What made it so unique? It wasn’t just about the decor or timeline. It was about who they are, and how their day reflected that in every way.

A Backyard That Held So Much Meaning

Katie and I met while teaching at Northwoods Middle School years ago. She told me back then, “You’re going to shoot my wedding one day.” I always said I wouldn’t photograph a friend’s wedding—but Katie made that decision easy.

She and Kyle had just finished renovating their Charleston home, and decided to host their wedding in the backyard. We started the day getting ready inside—documenting the quiet moments before the celebration began.

A First Look by the Water

Before the ceremony, we took a short trip down the road to a peaceful pond with a small dock for their first look. It was quiet, emotional, and gave them a few minutes just to be together before the day took off.

Back at the house, we did portraits with her something blue crew and prepared for the ceremony.

A Backyard Ceremony Under the Trees

Their intimate Charleston wedding took place in their own backyard. The setting was simple and beautiful—everything felt effortless and real.

The reception followed right there under a tent, with drinks, dancing, and everyone who mattered most gathered just a few feet from their home.

A Moment I’ll Never Forget

Katie gave a surprise speech during the reception and ended it by inviting her mom to the dance floor for a mother-daughter dance. Her mom didn’t know it was coming.

Katie thanked her for the way she raised her, the love she’s always given, and how she’s shown up through every season. That moment? One I’ll always remember—not just because I was photographing it, but because I know Katie. And I know how much that meant.

Why I Love Intimate Charleston Weddings

As a Charleston wedding photographer, I’ve worked in big venues, historic sites, and destination spots. But nothing compares to the kind of connection you feel at a small, intentional wedding—especially when it’s hosted in a place that already holds so much meaning.

Katie and Kyle’s backyard celebration was full of heart, history, and moments that mattered. It was real. And that’s what I always aim to capture.
