How Far in Advance Should You Book Your Wedding Photographer?

Nashville Wedding Photographer and videographer

Booking your photographer is one of the first things I’d encourage you to do after locking in your venue. Not because I’m biased, though maybe a little, but because your photographer is the one vendor who is with you for the entire day. From the quiet moments getting ready to the last song of the night. And the good ones fill up fast.

Here is what you actually need to know.

The Simple Answer

Most couples book somewhere between 9 and 18 months out. If your wedding falls on a fall Saturday or a peak season weekend, the earlier end of that window is the safer bet. If you have a weekday date or an off season wedding, you have a little more breathing room, though earlier is always better than scrambling.

Peak vs Off Season

Peak season runs through April, May, September, October, and early November. These Saturdays go fast and are often reserved well over a year in advance.

Off-season includes January, February, July, August, December, and most weekdays. You will generally find more flexibility here, but booking early still gives you the most options and the least stress.

By Wedding Type

Local weddings do best with 12 to 16 months of lead time, especially for popular fall dates.

Destination weddings need 12 to 20 months. Travel gets built around an existing calendar, so the earlier you reach out, the better your options.

Elopements and weekday weddings can usually come together in 6 to 9 months, and last-minute is sometimes possible depending on availability.

Why It Matters

Photographers only take a set number of weddings each year. Booking early means you get your date, your style, and enough time to actually plan together instead of rushing through everything at the last minute. It also means you are not settling for someone whose work does not feel like you just because your first choice was already booked.

When you reach out early, you give yourself more of everything. More choice, more breathing room, and more confidence going into the day.

How Many Photos Will You Receive?

For full-day coverage, most galleries come in between 600 and 900 images.

That includes candid moments, portraits, ceremony highlights, reception energy, and all the in-between details. The final count depends on your timeline, guest count, and how the day unfolds. I am not trying to hand you hundreds of near-identical shots. Every image in your gallery is there because it adds something to the story of your day.

“The photos capture every raw emotion and detail.”

FAQ

Is it ever too early to book? No. Plenty of couples lock in their date 18 months out and it is never a bad move.

Do I need my venue booked first? It helps, but a lot of couples reach out while they are still venue shopping. We can figure out the details together.

What about last minute bookings? Sometimes it works out, especially for off season and weekday dates. Reach out and we will see what is possible.

Do documentary style photographers book faster? Often yes. It is a specialized approach and couples who want it tend to know early on that it is what they are looking for.
